390 intercepter

Maybe some of you can tell me what special modifications they did to the 390 police intercepter motors. I found one that was out of a 63 police car and the guy just wants to get rid of it but I would like to know a little more about it. thanx, mike

The 390PI had 10.1:1 compression and a solid cam. That is pretty much all I know.

It looked like to me and a friend that the 390PI is an internally ballanced, so another question is would this be a very good motor for a 72 f-250 that pulls a trailer and sometimes hauls a 9 1/2 foot cabover camper? Also what did you mean by an ungrooved crank? On the old 390 that I had built for my truck I had put an edelbrock manifold, cam, lifters, pushrods, roller timing chain,(all from comp cams), bored .030, heads shaved .005, ARP bolts throughout the intire engine, valve job w/new valves, locks, retainers and springs(also all from comp cams) and toped with a carter carb and k&n filter, the ignition system is through a MSD-6 ignition box and coil to match. I would like to use as much as I can on this 390PI. Do you think this would be a good combo to use on the 390PI?

AFAIK On the 61-63 PI & Special they didn't groove the con rod journals on the crank.
On the 63-65 390 Special they grooved them.
Or maybe it was the mains.

Main journal is grooved.I've got one in the shop.I've wondered if
if this couldn't be done to a standard 390 crank, and if it
would be worth the trouble.

Two things made the PI engines of the early sixties. Solid lifter cams and cast iron header shorty exhaust manifolds.

Check for dual oilpan gaskets, on the Mercury
cop car I had, it had a crank scraper, and
it was sandwiched between two oilpan gaskets...
