trying to install a new distributor need help
I am in the process of putting my 460 back together. Its been a few weeks since I could work on it but now I am stuck again. I bought a new proform distributor and it has the coil right on top of the dfistributor instead of off to the side. My question is what wires go to what? Their is only a space for 2 wires to be connected. They say bat and tach. The old set up had 5 wires going into it. I was told to just hook up the ignition switch but I don't know which one that is.
I got ther truck to turn over but it will not start. I don't think that fuel is pumping through the carb but I know it is getting to the carb. Would a pressure regulator help? I also am having a hard time figuring out the distributor.
did you climb over top of the engine and pump the throttle by hand on the carb to check for fuel spray....still having the same issue with the distributor?Since I don't haver that year chilton's.....I'd say go with deductive reasoning...you're lookin to which wire to connect to the coil right?soooo turn the ignition switch to on then take a test light to each wire.....I know it sounds stupid but.....then just take each wire that's hot (if there's more than one) and one by one hook them up to the BAT wire turn the truck over and check for spark from the coil......Sorry I couldn't help more.....
It sounds like you bought a Chevy style HEI distributor that is made to fit the 460
On these distributors everything that is needed for the ignition system is in the distributor.
All you need to do is a find a wire that has a full 12 volts while the igntion switch is on and hook it to the Bat terminal on the distributor.
The tach terminal is for if you have a tach, it is not neccesary to have anything hooked up to that terminal in order to get the engine running so you can worry about finding the right wire for that later (if you actually even have a tach)
