So I just noticed that, although my truck is a '48, but it has the '49-53 style flathead in it. April 19 1948 is stamped on the passenger side of the firewall. Did ford switch to the new style flathead mid-year? Maybe I really have a '49? The Vin starts out with "88" though. Anyone?
The first 8 in your vin is for 48. The second 8 is half of the engine designation 8R for the 239 V8. 49 and 50 vins started with the number 9.
Common misconception perpetuated by the flathead car guys. Trucks got the new engine with the new bonusbuilt body on Jan 16, 1948 in the '48 trucks. Car guys had to wait one whole model year for the new flathead.
You can tell car guys from truck guys by how they date the late series flatty. Car guys call it 49 - 53 and truck guys refer to them as 48-53 (54 in canada)
I've seen pictures and heard reports, in the states too, of 48's that had 42-47 sheetmetal and 59A engines. Seems production of the new trucks ran a little behind.
