This is actually my moms Expy. She was on her way home from the OBX today and the tranny just quit. She had recently had the 90K tranny service done at the local dealer. She told me that it had been slipping before that and figured the tranny flush would fix it, well it did, in a bad way. She said that it started on the road, like OD would not engage. She stopped at a light and it would not move, she was able to limp it into a dealership about 300 miles from here. The said the front pump quit causing it too cook the fluid and die. The dealer quoted her $3800 to install a remanufactured from Ford tranny. I thought that was steep, she rented a car and is going to think it over this weekend. It only has 91K on it and has never pulled more than a utility trailer. I am just looking for feedback on the price she was quoted. It is a 2001 XLT 5.4, 4R100 like mine. She is basically debating on whether to put that much money into something that old. I think it has alot left but it is her decision. Thanks, Dan
I think you could find one a lot cheaper! http://cgi.ebay.com/Ford-F-350-F-250...QQcmdZViewItem
If she want to get a newer ride then just get one out of a junk yard and then trade it in.
But look around! I just got a new 4R100 built for racing and it was only $3900 + shipping and installation.
Assuming your mom's Expy is in good shape, can you trade to a newer vehicle for $3800 and have a warranty? The $3800 is steep, but Ford is going to charge list for the reman. and a higher rate for labor than a private shop, probably $75-$100/hr. Right now at work I am putting bearings in a rear end in an 01 Expy that has 175,000 mi. on it. The body is straight and clean, no rust. If the vehicle is paid for then I think the answer is a no brainer as to what she should do.
She actually does not need the Expy. She bought my wifes 03 Focus when we bought our 500 3 Months ago. She looked at trading it but everyone was trying to lowball her on the trade. It had been in a rearend accident before she bought it, that did not show up on car fax back in 2001. She was also rearended last year. The vehicle was reparied correctly both times but between that and gas prices, they are offering nothing. She was merely holding on to it for personal reasons, as my Dad passed away only 1 year after they bought it. After looking around on the net, I see the dealer is either making a BIG profit or these things are a pain in the butt to install.
