Quick water pump question

I hvae a 94 f-150 302 atx truck with roughly 144k on it. Recently I noticed the water pump leaking out of the weap hole (I think thats what its called). I pump some stop leak in it as I have to drive the truck roughly 4-500 miles tell my car gets out of the body shop in a few days..

Currently the leak has stopped. Do I need to worry about anything tell I can get the pump changed out? I won't have any time to replace it during these next few days and am forced to drive the truck back and forth to work...

My guess is it's a toss up.....weephole leaking means it's going bad......it could tie up on you at any time.......4-500 miles is a lot of driving under those circumstances.
I'd hate to see it happen out on the road when you have to add a tow bill to your repair costs.

I never drove one after it started leaking so I can't really say either way. I'd sure try to get a ride to work though.

Good Luck
Bob
I know you didn't want to hear that but.........

you need to replace the water pump.

the stop leak was just a band aid which as you know come off for the slightest reason.

fix the problem before you have to do it on the road.

it is a lot of fun getting the clutch fan off in your own garage, it will be even more fun on the side of the road.

I bought my truck in Feb. with a leaking water pump and just replaced it last weekend. Mine leaked about a pint a week at most and I only have to drive about 3 miles to work but with winter coming soon I needed to get it done. I'm not a huge fan of stop leak, I have seen that stuff plug radiators and settle in block water jackets and cause problems. The people that did that most likely used much more than they should have, just a word of caution on that stuff.

if you must drive before repair carry
about 5 gallons of water with you at all times
and keep a radiator cap with the release lever on it

Cheaper to replace a waterpump than a motor.

I do agree with everyone better to replace it then drive on it tell my next day off to do it, but when your working 14 hour days that doesn't give you any time to fix it. Right now I am checkign everythign before I take off in it. I also have 4 1 gallon jugs of water with me at the moment.

Check the water pump shaft for side to side play. If there is any play the bearing is worn and the pump shaft could break(rare). At speed it could damage the radiator and other parts up front. My pump is ok but I will probably replace it soon due to 178k. I also plan to install electric fans at the same time.
There is a tool made to help in removing the fan. I always install one of those lever type caps on my trucks.
Good Luck

Please keep in mind, the heater core is cheap and really easy to replace. The radiator is not so cheap, but it too is very easy to replace. After using a little stop leak you may have to replace both.
Good luck Frank

Well it made it one day and I think thats about all it will do now..... 8-( I drove a total of roughly 90 miles today and it never got hot. Every time it started to creep up I would pull over and let it set for a little bit tell it was safe to put more water in it without taking the chance of burning myself any. The temp guage never seen A in normal. The truck runs fine however its making a werid noise which I have no idea what it is.... It almost sounds like something is rattling in the engine.

Now here this the werid thing. I can't reproduce the noise. It doesn't matter on load of the engine. rpm range or anything like that. This rattling noise isn't constant and only did it twice during the entire trip. I pulled over the first time it happened and check all my fuilds and they were fine. So I started the truck up no noise out of the normal. So I proceeded to rev it up a rev times and even holding at different rpms and no werid noise. So I decided to try this again but this time in gear same results. I also did this again when I got home and nothing out of the norm.... A friend happends to have today off so I have a ride into work... just not home.... So thats going to be interesting to figure out. lol

I'm thinking that noise is the waterpump... their is no shaft play on the fan. Any ideas?

I'd say take a day off...the day before you have off stop by the parts store pick up the pump...since you work so damn longsleep in a little pull the pump off put the new one in and it should be ready to go the next day.......14 hours a day is killer...Ionly work 8 and I am dog tired every night.More power to ya.

Is their a trick to getting the fan off? I have the belt still on and when I try to break the 5 bolts loose the pulley turns... Now I dont see anywhere that I can stick a screw driver in it or anything to stop it from spinning. Right now the bolts are soaking in WD40. Thanks in advance to any tips you guys may have.

you have to remove the fan clutch, not the small bolts.

get a set of removal tools from auto parts store, they rent them.

or use two belt wrenches.

the clutch turns on like a normal bolt.

use cardboard in front of fan so you do not hurt your radiator.
