white smoke

when I start it up I get a litle puff of white and black smoke...goes away right away and doesnt smoke under load unless I get on it....I thought I read that this may be a sign of an EGR cooler failure? or is that whne it is white smokeall the time?

Thanks

I have a puff of white smoke every so often when I take off from stop. I started noticing it more after installing my MRBP exhaust turbo back off road system. I initially noticed it after the California recall flash. Is it a bad thing to have white smoke? I don't know much about diesels but I know in gassers white is usually coolant leaking into the head. It doesn't seem like that's what it is on my truck.

This is normal, and is unburned diesel fuel, do to cold cylinder temps when started.

white smoke at start up, is usually normal when starting on a COLD morning...

i know on our big generators at work that white smoke could be from a clogged air filter also. if it goes away, it's probably just from being cold, or if it takes a few minutes, it could also be rings. once the engine is up to temp and the metals have expanded and sealing properly it could go away... i doubt this is it, i'm just throwing a worst case scenario out there, dont let this scare you off.
