im runnin a v10 with a flowmasters 40serries with a custom built 4 1/2 inch outlet sounds like a cummins. im thinkin bout puttin stacks on it would dual stacks (y in the bed) make it quieter or should i just get i single i want it as loud as i can get it but still have that nice deep sound
I know in some ares stacks are illegal. If your local safety inspections specify the tailpipe must be in a certain location, then stacks would be illegal. Check your local laws. Chances are you would be ok, just thought I would let you know that there have been incidents in some areas.
As far as how it would sound, I don't really know. I'm guessing that in may be a little louder to the driver, but that it shouldn't drone or resonate much at all. That 4.5 inch pipe would have a very deep tone, but it would probably choke out some power due to the sheer size of it.
im runnin a y pipe to a high flow cat then to a flowmasters 40 all in 3 inch pipe. the outlet on he muffler is a 3 inch but we welded a 41/2 inch piece to the muffler itselfovertop the outlet pipe so that shouldnt be an issue with power it just gives it a deeper sound and for the stacks only being on diesels...i would take my v10 over any diesel out there you dont have to make smoke to be a bad @$$
Smoke blowing out a diesel is proof of poor fuel management. A better turbo will clean up some of the smoke, and twin turbos would do even more. They smoke when they can't get enough air quickly enough. Guess those guys should go back to the drawing board and decide which was more restrictive, the factory 3.5" pipe or the factory turbo.
The stacks will amplify the sound, it will be deeper, but also louder. I dont run mufflers and I'm not required to have cats, so my truck is pretty loud. My neighbor says he grows more chest hair everytime I start it. I have no problem with stacks on gas trucks(obviously), I just don't like the fake stacks. We have a guy around here with a nice chevy dually, has 2.5 stacks, but a tailpipe under the truck as well.

Thats what I was going to suggest that he does lol.
It's just my personal opinion, certainly not aimed to offend anyone, but fake parts belong on imports. Fake nitrous bottles, fake hood pins, fake carbon fiber, stickers that look like screws. There's nothing wrong with a good looking truck, but for me it has to be functional too. The ony way I would have fake stacks is if they had flame throwers in them.
If he was still using the cats and mufflers with the appropriate sized pipe, the stacks are basically big fancy tips. That shouldn't hurt anything. My stacks are 5" diameter, but the pipe between the motor and the stacks is only 2.5". I will admit to knowing a little more than squat about the newer motors though, I work mostly with old iron.
I forgot to mention that the stock y-pipe on both the 5.4l and 6.8l 99'-04' SDs is a major restriction point in both power and sound.
Replacing the stock Y-pipe section with eaither the EBay or Stans Y-pipe will dramatically increase exahust sound and note below 3k rpm as well as providing a noticable increase in low end power and throttle response.
Something you could do is run four or five inch stacks and run smaller 2.5 inch pipe with glasspacks inside them. It would give you the big rig look and not hurt your torque or horsepower
running a set of stacks will do absolutely nothing in the power department if you have a cat and muffler on it.
a 5 inch stack is the same as a turn-down pipe at the end of the muffler. the only thing the stack will do is give you sound up top, not down under the truck.
the thing that matters is what is before the cat and muffler, not after it.
a truck with a 3 exhaust and a 3 inch pipe out after the muffler will run the same as a truck with a 3 inch exhaust, and a 6 inch pipe after the muffler. the only difference will be in the noise produced in the pipes. a 3 inch out will carry it all out to the end. a 6 inch pipe will let the sound resonate in the pipe before it gets out the end, making it sound better.
