this sucks, it smokes a good bit when i start it then i calms down alot but never really goes away. its a really light color smoke that only comes out of my left side. what are the chances thats its the rings? i got the motor out of a junker f250 so i dont know a whole lot about it. im gonna do a compression test this weekend, but i just want a little input from yall who know.
It is a good thing you a have an independent dual exhuast. Because now you know which side it is. I would lean pretty heavily toward the ring problem. I have heard that an engine that has set for a long time will sometimes smoke for awhile and then as the rings (reseat??) the smoking goes away. Might be a matter of time before it goes away. It also could be a rering job in your future.
I always thought that if a motor smokes when started after sitting for sometime that it was due to oil draining down the valve stems..But I do get into trouble when I think..LOL..
I agree with FordFan. I have always believed that smoke at start up was due to worn valve guide seals. Oil runs down the stems when setting and burns when cranked up.
What color is the smoke? Blue is oil, black is unburned fuel and white is engine coolant. A little blue smoke is not a huge deal, oil is not that expensive and as long as the engine is otherwise operating ok, I'd let it go for now. JMHO! White may be a simple headgasket! Black a carb adjustment. Let us know.

its more of a blue tint and it seems to be getting worse. when i get on it hard smoke comes out just as i let off and aagain as it hits idle and thats an addition to the like smoking it does all the time. think it could be valve guides?
Don't "get on it" anymore! Keep the oil level a little above full, drive it easy, and start saving up for a overhaul. Fuzzy numbers, basic rebuild about 2K. Sorry!

I had a similar problem, recently after purchase I added atf to the oil before the change to help clean it up and afterward it would smoke only on startup. I thought it was valvestem seals and popped off the valvecovers. To my surprise, there was this burnt-oil-flaky-stuff that fell off the surface areas inside the valvecovers and was blocking the bottom oil return ports. When the engine was off the oil level was covering the valvestems and leaked down into the cylinders. I sucked all that **** up with a shop-vac, changed the oil again, and it hasn't smoked since.
hey blastmaster someone just told me today the same thing. i was hoping that would be the case but i decided to do the compression check first. here is what i found: passanger side from front to rear-135,125,125,125,130 /drivers side from front to rear-130,130,125,and(70) what are the chances its a valve? its 11:30 or id pull the cover just to have a look.
hey yall today i went ahead and popped off my valve covers. oil poured out of the drivers side. i guess that just might account for the smoking. it was all full of crap i dont thing those covers were ever taken off. all that oil sat back on that rear cylinder, maybe, just maybe that somehow affected the compression in that cylinder. hey we all can hope cant we. well im gonna run it a while and then do another compression test just to see. ill let yall know how it goes.
