Question brake time

I just started getting noises from by brakes. Front has a little shimmy but i can also hear the pad rubbing, front and rear. So i plan on doing this myself and want to go with the powerslot rotor and hawk pads for the front. It seems pretty straight foward. Now how about the rear? What is the ones you guys prefer. And now the 2nd questions in how can i tell if my rotors need to be replaced? ( FYI..I also tow a heavy toyhauler about 6 times yr 12k lbs. triple axle. ) thanks Jeff

The rotors should be measured using a micrometer...I'm not sure of the spec on your truck, but there is a safe minimal thickness that ford spec's..on my truck (1999 crewcab dually) it is 1.417" minimum, with a new thickness of 1.5".

So, since i dont have a way to measure them, It would probably be in my best interest to replace the front rotors pads and the upgraded pins since it prob needs new pads anyways.. thanks

Any local machine shop should be able to turn (resurf) them for you for cheap. Rotor's can be turned a few times if the pads have been changed regularly. For my $$$ i don't think I could replace the rotors unless they could not be turned further. You can also find a micrometer at Harbor Freight for cheap too. Good Luck

The Minimum thickness should be stamped on the rotor outer edge. Like Neal and Whit said get a micrometer from tool store $10-$20 and measure them. If not below min thickness then just have the rears turned and add the Hawk Pads. Make sure you replace the caliper slide pins while your doing everything else Look here http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/cu.html for a good write up.

Do I remember something about Ford, in their wisdom, saying they strongly suggest that the rotors be turned on the truck? Now I've never seen it done, but I recall something I read/heard/dreamt that suggested that.
