Replacing 390 pistons

If you are looking for stock replacements go to autozone and get the badger brand pistons for $100 a set. Try to get some pistons for a higher compression 390 like one from a fairlane or something insted of the low compression pickup pistons. You can get the forged TRW L2291 pistons from summit racing for like 35 bucks a piece if they still have any. I guess TRW is going out of business.

Replacing 390 pistons

I had the same problem! Pistons for small blocks and Ch#$%s up the wazoo. Zip for FE's. Give Rob at Blue Oval Performance in Colorado a call. 303 762-8298 He had my pistons at my door in a couple of days. Silvolite 1130s at 30 over for 164.72 a set including the wrist pins and spiral locks. I also got moly rings for 57.33 and all for 12 bucks shipping. Rob is really knowledgeable about FEs and will take time to "Bench Race" a little.

Replacing 390 pistons

Although I have not used them the Badger pistons are basicly the same as the original stock 390 piston. They are of a cast design. That is not nessicarlit a bad thing the are just more prone to coming apart in more extreme stuations(like hard racing). They are also lower compression. That is because they are acctually 410 pistons. they are just in a 390. For a more performance style piston check out Ross pistons. JE pistons. Or most any piston manufacturer. While not all list pistons for FE's they do "usually" have them. And the other very expensive option would be to have set custom made. I hope this helps.

Badger recently combined with Ohio and Ertel pistons. Overall, the Badger's are not as good a quality, nor as consistant in tolerances as the Silvolites, SealPowers, or Zolners. I have heard from a number of sources that you don't always know what you'll get with the Badger's, as they have been combining all of their pistons with the same application Ohio and Ertels and putting them mix-and-match into boxes. They are not manufactured to the same specs. Driving some of the other shops I talk to nuts.

Thanks for the plug and kind words. -->
