I remember the early 80's F series offered a black rubber bumper strip that fit into the recessed area on the front bumper. They're shown in the 83 brochure. I don't recall ever seeing any in person. It was NOT part of the XLT package.
Were holes drilled to fasten them or adhesive?
Anybody still have them on their P'up?
I'll have to take a gander at my dad's 84 XLT, it has it. I think it is just glued on though. It also has the guards on it as well, the two may be connected in the option. They also had the rubber.
well i was going to say yes because my '81 350 has them. but took a look at the pics i took of the truck when new and saw that orignally it didn't. i guess my brother in law (first owner) must have changed it. but the news is that you can have them if you want them. i have a bumper on my truck that has rubber and it looks totally right. the rubber is secured by means of square holes punched in bumper and square tabs molded on the back of rubber strips.
I have them on my 85 Bronco, which I believe is an XLT. Pics in gallery, one of them should show what I think you are referring to. They pop in I think into holes in the bumper. I'll go look if you want. I hate it, it's ugly, and if not for the holes it would be gone.
cfrives.......yes, they do just pop in, no glue required. i do think they look better with than without. without the rubber you can see the recessed area along the length of the bumper which just looks like something belongs there. i guess if you didn't know any better it probably wouldn't make any difference, but if you know that that recess is for a trim, then it does look like something is missing. there is also a rear bumper (heavy truck bumper) w/ matching rubber trim. i have one in the yard i want to put on, just can't get to it yet.
That's strange, since the front bumper on my dad's has the rubber, but the rear did not... Not denying, just strange they didn't do both. BTW, he got it new, so no one has changed it along the way. Actually, the rear was taken off right away and an ag hitch put on.
attn. to all reading the thread........i may have mislead you to think that what i have is a ford factory rear bumper. i don't know for a fact that it is a factory bumper. for all i know it is a after market piece. but if it is after market, it had to have been designed spec. for ford trucks. it is a heavy duty step bumper, chrome, diamond plate top, with a recess running the length of it w/ the matching rubber trim, just like the front. they do match exactly. but i can't say for a fact where it came from, only that it came from one of the salvage trucks. sorry if i confused anyone.
On my dad's truck, the truck was already sitting on the lot, so no ordering to it... I don't know for sure what the XLT all gets, but it has power windows/locks, a/c, nice interior, chrome trim, rubber strip on the trim and front bumper, bumper guards, two tone paint.
I did a post recently describing what all went into an XLT package.
Back in the early 80's most the trucks here in Texas would come without the rear bumper. The dealer would offer all kinds of aftermarket ones to install.
Mine is like 1/4 inch plate with a diamond top....been daring someone to rearend me but no takers.
