my timing is dead on, it only does this when im going down the road. in park and revving the hell out of it, no ringing. and i been using regular gas, no additives. the compression is about 9.3:1 or maybe 9.4:1.that was told to me but engine-re-new here in modesto. they shaved the block some, to make sure is was straight and level. the guy who did my heads, he shaved them too, again tomake it straight and level.
Try Premium Gas .... If that works try midgrade. However with that compression most likely you'll have to use Premium and or retard the timing.
well i changed the plugs, they were tan/grey in color. the plugs on p/s had some carbon build up on the plug threads only, not on the tips. i also checked the timing, ex-neighbor had it set at 12B, the book i have said it should be 6B. thats where i set it now. took it for a test run, good. still has a small amout of ringing/pinging really have to listen to it. but it only starts making the sound after i run about 10-12 miles on it. the engine needs to be warmed up pretty good for the ringing/pinging to start. i still have a 1/2 tank of regular gas in it. im waiting until im low enough to fill it with 93 or 100 gas, plus i need to replace the gas line at the tank, it is showing its age of cracking, but being unmarried to a blonde i keep forgetting. i guess the blondness does wear off. lol
Wow might need to richen up the carb a bit or change the jets. 6B seems right. Maybe you need to get it out on the freeway and burn out some of that old carbon. Does it have the stainless steal valves. How long ago was the rebuild if at all? Answers to some of those questions will give us clues.
Oh just thought about it.... Your is built a bit. For sure Premium gas imo. Then if you have headers ... It's most likely a leak. Duh. I thought you had a stock 360 with 4bbl. Yours need the gas and if headers a leak check. If you have never retightened them most likely that's the problem. If it's been a long time you might need new gaskets and well. They burn through pretty easily.
Good Luck .... Hope it loose header bolts. Tighten center out. That would be the cheap/easy fix.
the orginal rebuild was done in 2/07. then ruined 2 radiators. then sat at a shop in atwater for 2 months, need the front pump seal replaced (put it in backwards) then his ford mechanic went awol for 2 months, so i had it towed home again. had transmission overhauled with new manufactured torque converter. i have flow tech headers on it, and new power stick mufflers. neighbor gave me a 72 edelbrock 750 carb. the heads were rebuilt in 2/07 as well. new oil pan (milodon) had engine in air on hoist, son let it down too fast. 3yr olds are very quick. i was getting the transmission setup to attach it to the engine. i still have a bad oil leak at rear main seal. funny it was not leaking when i sent it to the repair shop a few months ago. i have not had the time to replace it. i also rebuilt the carb a few months ago, that is working out good for now. but my new neighbor is thinking i might have 2bbl heads, he was just thinking that is why im getting a piston ringing sound. as of today 9/24/07 i still have a 1/2 tank of gas, im waiting until i get it all used up before i fill it with a better grade of gas, i was thinking of maybe using 100 octane just to see what the engine would do with that gas. the valves in the heads are stock, the heads were rebuilt to stock with exception of the springs that would handle a cam with .050 lift. and the mating surface was milled very slightly to make sure it was flat and smooth.
hope this all helps. just need to get it straightened out before 11/10/07 for the pleasanton trip.
if i need to change the whatever in the carb, what size would i need, i dont know jack about carburators.
I was gonna offer, but I have 2 kids graduating karate, and a birthday party to do this week. I have a light with the dial on the back, if you need one.
