I have a 1993,F-350,7.3, crew cab,8ft bed. While I am driving at normal speed, the engine begins to skip and jump as though it has air or dirt in the fuel line, some time it will even stall as it were out of fuel, but not.
I did replace 4 glow plugs, but no other problems. I am getting arround 23 miles to gal. I do use an additive,(Diesel Klean),gray bottle, with octain booster, every time I fill the tank.
Has anyone else experenced this problem?
I'm not a diesel mechanic, but I think the glow-plugs turn off after the engine gets warm. They should have no effect after that. I would check all fuel lines for leaks and change the filter just for good measure. If it's one of those computer controled diesels check all your connectors. Hope this helps.
OK, thanks. All filters have been changed. All fuel lines have been cleaned. As for the glow plugs, I did test all and found 4 bad. They were replaced...As for the computer, it has NONE. Its the (DSL) type....

It is not your glow plugs, those are a starting aid only. Any fuel in the engine oil (crankcase)? No signs of fuel leaks or any place where air could be drawn into the fuel system? Most of the time if you have a loose fuel line or something of that sort where it can "suck air" it will also be hard to start. Is this a itermittant issue or just ocassionaly? I had a ex brother in law that had a Ford diesel display similar symptoms and his has a fuel shut off solenoid that was faulty. No chance you disturbed the wiring to the shut off solenoid when you replaced your glow plugs?
It dose not do it all the time. In fact, it has not done for over 2 weeks. As for the work , a certified Ford deisel mechanic did the work to replace the glow plugs and check it. I am not a mechanic. He does not know what the problem is either. Thats why I am askiing the people in this forum for some help.
I believe those engines have a electrical connection for the injectors passing thru the valve cover. I would check those wires real close for chaffing or shorts. I know 7.3's have had trouble with cam position sensors but I am unsure of what years used them. I do know that both of these items have caused 7.3 owners more than a few issues with symptoms like you describe. Sorry I am not a little more knowledgable on these engines, I usually work on Detroit Diesel 60 series, Cats and Cummins. It's very rare for me to even look at a little engine like that, but I'll try to help ya as much as I can.
