motor mounts

I just bought a 70's F350. The engine is an FE with a motor mount on the front of the engine. The front mount isn't used in the truck though....The guy I bought it from said it's a 390 from a bread truck. My question is...did the regular FE's use these mounts or could the engine be one of those heavy duty FE's? Also, could you get a 390 with a two barrel carb? Thanks!!

Sounds like you acctually have an FT block anyway. The FT's were putin large trucks, like the F-450 on up. They are interchangable to an extent. The FT blocks used the motor mounts you are talking about. If you need the other mounts the holes for the mounts should be there. You will need to get the mounts for you truck (myabe). check the block were the normal motor mounts would go. If there are only 2 holes you will ned the early type motor mounts. If there is 4 then you should be able tom use the mounts specific for your truck. I hope this helps.

The engine is already in the truck.....I noticed that the front mount is STILL on the motor, so that's why I was wondering if I had an FT or an FE. I have a 390 FE out of a F250 that I've been comparing it too. The only differences I see are that the "mystery" engine has a canister type filter mounted to the fuel pump and it also has dual belts on the alternator. The main reason I need to know for sure is because I want to use the intake and distributor from the 390 FE on the "mystery" engine.

Also, I heard somewhere that all 390 truck engines had four barrel carbs....is this true? Could you get a 390 in a truck with a two barrel carb? Thanks!!!

The 390's could either be had with a 2 or 4 barrel in trucks from 74 - 76 but most were 2bbl. carbs. The 391 FT engines had 4bbls but their intakes were horrible for performance. Very small ports to match up to the small port/valve heads.

One more important note on the swapping of intakes from one to the other. The heat passages are in different places from the FT and FE engines. I THINK the heat cross over for the FT's are either slightly forward of center or slightly rearward of center. But, That may all be moot. If, the heads on the Mystery motor are from a light duty truck (aka 100-350) or a passenger car, the intake off of the 390 should work no probs.

Ben_E If you could post a casting # or 2 we can help to aleviate some of the speculation we we are jumping to. The Block casting Is located under the Oil fliter. The Head castings are between the center plugs. The Intake is right on top usually in front, though some where in the back (behind carb). The Block casting , at least for me, is hard if not impossible to see with motor in truck. Maybe I am just not holding my head right. Anyway let us know.
