New headers, old cats

Hey guys, here's a few questions. Do you think it's worth it to upgrade my headers but keep the cats and the exhaust stock? Would there be any improvements in power and mileage? I don't have the money to get a cat-back exhaust or new cats and headers seem like a sensible idea.

From a previous experince with a 4.6, i don't think headers would be as cheap as a cat back exhaust. They might improve the performance a little bit. With installing headers will improve flow, but the stock cats may hold back that flow. I would go with a cat back exhaust, but you say that might be a problem so i'd hold back until you could.

At summit racing I found a pair of header by summit, prob crap but better than stock, and they were under $200, I'd say that's a pretty good price

I installed some shorty hedmen hedders from Jegs on my 97 short bed and really like them. They fit well and I did feel a little more power. It seems like my 4.6 isn't working as hard. I have a Gibbson super truck exhaut and the combination of the two sound bad *** when you pass someone.
