Brightbox effect question
OK, so up here in Canada, we have to have these damn daytime running lights. Anyways, I bought a module to do this for $25 and realized that if I left one of the six wires unhooked (like they suggest when installing on an import) that I can basically turn this unit into a Brightbox too. My headlights will always be on when the truck is running, and failure to hook up the high beam wire leaves me to manually turn my highbeams on while the low beams remain on too.
Now my question, Does anyone know if this is a safe mod? I have heard that the headlights can get too hot, bulbs burn out faster, and voltage problems etc. Is this an old wives tale? Does anyone running the brightbox or the do-it-yourself version have any comments. Thanks

I never looked at the voltage at the lights, but they really dont run heavy enough wire to headlights anymore. I would not suggest using both high and low beams at the same time. Yes it will make the bulbs brighter, yes it will burn them out faster. IMO the best way to get better lighting is to add accessory lights. I have a set for fog, and a set of driving lights. The headlights i leave alone to fill in just infront of the truck.

Thanks fellas. I decided to opt out of this when installing the module. I noticed how pathetic the wires going to the highs and lows were that I changed my mind.
Medhvac, I imported this truck from the states and in Canada the government has come up with this statistic that fewer accidents happen due to day time running lights. Maybe true, maybe not. Not going to dispute it, but to get this baby certified up here it has to be done. I just thought I might be able to make something cool with this otherwise useless mod.

I've had the high/low beam mod done for over a year and have not had a bulb burn out yet. I upgraded the harness with the APC heavy duty light harness and I think that may be part of why I have not experienced any problems running high and low lights at the same time. I run across the desert at night and run them for hours at a time, without any problems.

I have the Brite Box and run it with the stock components. Never a problem. I do not use it a lot but on night runs between Houston and Dallas or Houston and Austin they are on most of the time. It's a good tool for spotting deer that are thinking about jumping out in front of you. I have the model with the fog light control so that I can run them all at the same time.

On my 99 i have found that if you find the sweet spot between the push for high and the normal low position u can get it to kinda hang up on a spot where it will keep both high and low on at the same time. just the same as flash to pass but without having to hold it there.. It takes a little practice but it doenst take long to get the hang of it. I do this all of the time (last 3 months having the truck) and have driven my 95 cherokee for years and never had a problem. But thats not saying that tomorrow i could be coming home from work and it won't blow out.

I've considered putting that wire I was talking about on a switch inside the cab, so I can turn the low beams off with the highbeams if desired. Might even tap into those fog lights with this too.
