I have been having a problem for some time now with this truck. Every now an again it just misses so to speak going down the road. Now it wont start. In the past few months i have changed the following parts as needed.... IH CPS, HPOP, IPR Valve, Fuel filters every 4-6 months, and i always run 15 40 rotella. I have New glow plugs, Allient power injectors, valve cover gaskets. The computer does not throw any codes?? Just wont start. I have only minor mods....K&N, 4" turbo back, and a superchip tuner. I am at a lose here...if anyone has an idea please feel free to say it{not scraping the truck} to much money in it now.
Thanks in advance.
Your problem really sounds like a failing CPS. Does you tach move while trying to crank? Any of the wiring harness connections under the hood could come loose and do the same. Weak batteries could keep it from cranking, but shouldn't cause the misses.
sorry for miss leading, the truck does crank just sounds like it is not firing. The tach does move and i ran some new wire and pigtails along with checking all connections. It happened earlier today when i pulled out of my drive way. Went through the gears to 3rd and the nothing, lost pedal, truck slowly died then as soon as i pushed in the clutch that was it. But i did try changing the cps but did nothing either. I have an IH and Ford version CPS it did the same thing with either.
Loosing power to the CPU?
Or the IDM failing?
Kennedyford had a vexing problem like that and it turned out to be a fuse that looked good but had a crack in the conductive strip.
well i tryed looking at all of the fuses but i will take another look. i am really getting mad at this thing. i just have a hard time believing this truck b/c just the other day i pulled the big trailer with about 25-28,000 on it an it ran like hell. out on the highway i was in 6th about 65MPH no problem an now i got nothing.. thanks for a advice
Hey Ballard what year is your truck ? My dads is a 99 F-350 and is having a simalar problem his truck runs down the road and cuts out and every once in a while. then some times it will stall at a idle but fires right back up. He has replaced the CPS in the last year. He has had it checked for codes today but no codes came up. Going to check with my local shop to see if they have any info. Will let you know if I find anything out.
I agree with Kwikordead. Sounds like power loss, or intermittent signal to the computer. I'd start by checking your chip to make sure it's not loose. Do you get any lights flashing when the truck misses, or does the glow plug light stay on when the truck won't start? I had similar issues with a short in the main engine wiring harness.
the truck is a 2000, and my opion of it right now is that if anyone out there has an 7.3L or 6.9L IDI i will trade for it no problem. the last one a had was beat and still ran... thanks for the help i am curios as to what they will say
No i dont have any lights going on and everything seems to be the same as always. I double checked fuses an there all good. i did get a code this time. it was a P0603, i believe it has somthing to do with keep alive memory????

From the service manual:
MA1 CONTINUOUS DTC P0603 IS SET WHEN THE PCM HAS LOST KAPWR
Note: This code may have been caused by disconnecting the PCM or the batteries.
Possible causes:
Battery or PCM has been disconnected.
battery cables loose or poor connection.
battery discharged.
open in KAPWR circuit.
blown fuse.
PCM.
Check for other codes.
Key on, engine off.
Clear DTCs.
Cycle key off, then on.
Perform retrieve Continuous DTCs.
Was DTC P0603 present?
Yes No
GO to MA2 . Intermittent failure, unable to duplicate. REPAIR other DTCs as necessary. If none, testing is complete. RESTORE vehicle. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.
MA2 CHECK 5 AMP FUSE (#2 FOR F-SERIES) OR (#27 FOR ECONOLINE)
Key off.
Measure voltage between KAPWR (MINI Fuse 2 on F-Series) or (MINI Fuse 27 on Econoline) and battery ground.
Is battery voltage present on both sides of the fuse?
Yes No
GO to MA3 . REPAIR short to ground on Circuit 729 (R/W) for F-Series or Circuit 37 (Y) for Econoline. RESTORE vehicle. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.
MA3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO PCM
Key off.
Install breakout box, leave PCM disconnected.
Measure voltage between PCM Test Pin 55 and ground Pins 25, 51, 76, 77 and 103.
Is B+ present?
Yes No
RESTORE vehicle; CLEAR DTC, RERUN test. If code reappears, REPLACE the PCM. REPAIR open on KAPWR circuit. RESTORE vehicle. CLEAR DTCs and RETEST.
The P0603 comes from the Superchips. Have you checked your oil level? Low oil can cause problems. It does sound like power loss, but you might want to check the oil level in the HPOP and make sure it is not the problem. Also, check that little cheap gold nut on the back of your IPR. It has been know to cause problems.
Just seen F350-6 post, I get the P0603 code everytime I change programs with my superchips. I will stay until I clear it a couple of times. So it might not be related to the problems your having.
well i tryed it a few times but got nothing. i did check dtc after everytime and no codes were found..at least something is getting better. the oil level is also good, but i cant get the plug out of the top resivoir. it has been messed up since i bought the truck. i did however take the senor?? out beside it and oil was full there.
Dan would know better than I would, but I would think the IDM would throw a code, so I'd start looking for a short causing the PCM to reset. That usually does not throw a code unless it's related to KAM or battery connections. The places to start would be the battery and ground connections and your chip.
On my truck the main engine wiring harness short would cause the glow plug light and water in fuel light to flash when it shorted, and the glow plug light would not shut off when the truck failed to start, but there are a lot of wires in that bundle and different shorts may have different symptoms.
