Fast Movin Karl,
I believe that 4 (ebbitts pass) is more of a challenge than 108 (sonora pass). At least on the most remote part of it. 108 is tight but there is a part of 4 that will pucker your arss to the seat for sure.
Both are beautifull drives though. After Hwy 4 mellows out, it turns into Hwy 89, which comes through my town.

Menci,
Caples is a very nice lake. There is a good mix of trout in there, of some good size as well. I have heard that there are Lake Trout in there as well. I have only fished there once, and that was from the shore. But I caught more of a buzz than fish anyway. A friend from out of town made sure we caught up on old times. Caples is on Hwy 88. Back in the old days, it used to be a pretty rough road, over the Sierras, I've heard. But nowadays, it's a pretty good highway. I like it better than 50 or 80. Less people, less traffic, over the pass.

Hope Valley does get the mosquitos, that's for sure. Ya gotta bring a good supply of bug juice (deet). They don't like that stuff. But like you said, early on in the season and they aint too bad, but then you might need a sweater for the nipply weather.

Yeah, you would need a permit. And there are designated tree cutting areas. Especially with the Nevada flat lands growing so fast, regulations are unfortunately a sign of the times. I suppose that masses of flat landers coming to the mountains for a Christmas tree could be rather destructive. Times they are a changin.

I'm counting on it Clint. Looking forward to it too. Let me know.

When is deer season in your area? If we are going to do a mountain meeting we will want to do it before the season starts.

That's a good point Clint. It might be archary season right now, and rifle season is not far off, if not already in progress... I don't have a license, and it ain't in my job description to validate deer these days, so I haven't been following the hunting regs. But it is the season, no doubt.
However, I don't think that stray bullits are a problem in Hope Valley. If that is your concern. The deer are smart enough this time of year to keep to the high ground. Normally, they won't come down into camping areas this time of year, 'cause they know some part time hillbilly will take an easy neck shot. Besides, it's illegal to hunt anywhere close to where FTE Members and folks dwell.
Their aint no wrong time, when the weather's nice, to get out and howl at the moon... I do, however, have a couple of things that I can't get out of, so if you are considering a trip this year, give me a call.
FTR, I am scheduled to be away for a trip to San Diego here soon. Let me know when you're considering a trip up this way, if you are.
Also, timing around the spray of fall colors is an excellent time to plan a trip for in this area. The Aspens really light up around late September and early October. Just a thought...
