Hey guys, i have an 89 with over 200k on it. the steering wheel has a good amount of play in it and no its not the tilt plate bolts. There is play in the two ball bearings that the steering shaft ride on. I just called the dealer today and they want $70 for both bearings. One of them is 3/4ID 1 3/16OD 1/4" thick, the other is 1 1/16ID, 1 1/2OD and 1/4" thick. Has anyone had trouble finding these sizes other then at the dealer. Ill get them if i need to but $70 seems like a lot for two small bearing.
had the same problem on my old E250
got a tilt steering column from the U pull it yard 35.00
a whole lot easier to change the whole one out
no other place to get new ones other than the stealership
I just check my steering shaft and the part of the shaft where the bearing rides is a little worn. .747" vs .751" for the bearing. Both bearings are also showing their wear. I threw the column back together tonight and ill have to dig around at the junk yard to see what they want for a column.
Thanks for the input.
ps, in the mean time i will keep searching for the bearings and if i find a supplier ill post it here.
Junkyards around Cleveland, Ohio charge 80 - 100 for a column.
I was able to get the bearings for less than 20 at my dealer for my 1994 XLT.
I think LMC has them listed.
I remember doing a search here that really helped a lot.............I have found that doing searches using different phrases placed between parentheses eventually gets you what you want here and it's best to search before posting.
