Cool Ticking when cold??

Just wondering if anyone has this problem with their V-10.
My truck is a 2002 extra cab 4x4 LB with 130000 Km. Every time I start it up for the first time of the day, it has a Quite noticable tick for about 3 to 4 minutes after start. Very noticable at the drivers side front area. Once it warms up every thing sounds good.Still has warranty. Any advice or comments would be helpfull. Thanks alot.

Get under the truck with a flashlight and check under the exhaust manifolds and check for any broken studs.

Check for missing studs up on the top sides of the manifolds as well.

The tick is probably an exhaust leak from one or more broken studs. After it warms up a little the manifolds expand and make the gap smaller.

Busted manifolds studs are pretty common.

Mine just started again. When I first got my truck I heard the ticking noise and I was missing three manifold bolts on the right side. 6 months later the sound is back, but this time on the left side. Atleast it is still covered under warranty. I told the dealer to replace both sides while they were at it, but they didn't want to listen.

WARNING! Be sure to check WHERE the ticking is coming from - if it's from around the COPs (coil-on-plug) on top of the motor, you have a loose spark plug.

You can use a piece of hose, one end to your ear, and hunt around with the other end to find where the tick is coming from.

Do you think that is a common problem when u have never changed the spark plugs through out the trucks life. (114,000 miles)

That is a common problem of plugs coming loose w/o proper maintence. You REALLY need to change the plugs around the 50-60,000 mile range and retrque them at 25,000 intervals.

Yes, do use the hose to locate that noise first!

Mine has done it since new and goes away after a few minutes. I can tell it's an injector, though, and don't worry about it.

Of course, if it's more of a loud tick or tap, we call it "piston slap", which is also a regular occurrence with mine. I have a '99 model with around 130K on it and I work it hard, but don't abuse it. I do regular care and maintenance and preventive maintenance, which helps, but I've not had a problem to speak of with it.

The ticking could also be cold piston slap common to many v-10's and other engines that goes away as the engine warms up. It is not usually a cause for concern and is more common on high mileage engines. I have 82 bronco with a 300 inline 6 with 248,000 miles that has cold piston slap for about the first 5 minutes. I will probably pull the engine at about 500,000 miles and rebuild it if it needs it.....!!!!!
