4X4 Lockers, yes, again!

I am sure this subject has been beaten to death here. I did search this subject and found inconclusive opinions to my question. So, here we go again. For my '99 PSD 4X4, 6 speed, stock gears and engine, I would like to add a rear locking system. I am leaning towards the "full on" Detroit Locker becuase of reputation. I am open to air locker or electric lockers or what else is out there. No one I know has set these up and there are not all that many folks in this area to ask so I am asking you all what your experiences has been with the various products that are out there and which you all feel have been the most reliable.

BTW, last winter I got myself stuck in snow bad enough that I had to walk out. It was about a nine mile hike through thigh high wet snow. To walk out the way I drove in meant a twenty one mile walk. So, I took the proverbial shortcut of last resort and I mean last resort. If it had not been for the elk game trail I came upon around sunset, there was a very likely chance I would still be up there under a tree or scattered around in pieces.

So, I am serious about adding lockers. I already upgraded my tire size and tread.

snow.. well youll need a good tread.. tires will be the best mod.. and should be the first.. then rear locker, then front locker.. maybe the first thing yous hould do is put some good TOW POINTS on your truck and buy a HIGHLIFT jack.. carry a roll of carpet so you can drive outa a bad situation.. and a tow strap.. all the locker wont work if you have street tread and no recovery gear.. think about a winch also.. that might even be a good idea before the lockers.

Remember too, lockers tend to be low side finders, meaning when both tires are turning you don't have one wheel holding an edge. You then slide down a side hill. Do you encounter a LOT of snow? You might be better served with a True Trac Limited Slip (also a Detroit/Trac Tech/Eaton product).

One word...WINCH. plus also don't go alone. The lockers may only get you into deeper trouble.

I hear the winch suggestion. Only problem was, no trees in area where I got stuck. I have a high lift jack and it was safe at home. Lockers would have gotten me out of that situation. Agreed that they can really bury the unwary and can contribute to side slipping. On the whole, reducing wheel spin would have been helpful. Work requires me to drive alone sometimes in that area. I usually am very careful but got over confident that day. I do carry chains, nice big bar chains, did not have them with me that day, of course!
