I have read about tuners causing daisy/star shaped markings on pistons of 6.0's and Ford voiding warranty based on this evidence. My questions are: What causes the markings and are some tuners more or less prone to this? I currently have a Flashpaq 1805 but might trade it in for an SCT. I basically want a tuner for better economy and a little better throttle responce. I'm not interested in burnouts or racing kids in mustangs. What is the safest tuner to run? And please save the "you play you pay" remarks.
The marks on the pistons are caused by high fuel delivery combined with lots of timing advance. Basically the explosion in the cylinder is so violent it knocks all the carbon deposits off the piston in a characteristic pattern determined by spray pattern and air flow.
SCTs are great tuners but the results you get are dependant on the guy writing the tunes for you. It's been said before but I'll say it again, you can't go wrong with Matt from Spartan Diesel. I've also heard good things about Eric from Innovative, although I've never dealt with him directly.
