I have a 1990 F350 4X4 E4od transmission. The truck has about 120,000 on it and has been used as a tow vehicle for a camper and a twin axle dump trailer. The trans fluid is discolored but doesn't have any funky smell to it. I don't know how many or if the fluid has ever been changed. Worst case scenario, If I was to change the fluid and filter, What possible ramafications could I be facing? Last thing that I want to do is replace the transmission in this truck.
If you do it right, and don't introduce any dirt into the tranny you won't have any problems. Use a filter from the dealer if you like. I find that the cork gaskets tend to leak, so I only get filters with the rubber ones. Don't forget to drain the torque converter.
just change the fluid along with the filter, if you dont know how long since its been changed then just change it, and putting lucas in helps alot and makes it run cooler too, remeber if you tow then its nice to change it around ever 15,000miles verses the reg. 30,000 miles
Thanks for the help. I'll definetly will use the lucas oil. Is the lucas oil tranny fluid or an additive. Is there anything else that I should do like flush the system out?
The Lucas oil is an additive, just substitute 1 quart of ATF for 1 quart of Lucas trans additive.
I advise against a flush. Many people with these older/high-mileage transmissions develop problems after tranny flushes because it can dislodge dirt and grime that has settled safely inside of the transmission, which can lead to clogged components and failure. I have seen lots of guys tell stories of having to rebuild a tranny that was healthy 5k miles prior, because of a fluid flush. Just drain the TC and drop the pan, you will get ALMOST all of the fluid out that way, there will be a couple quarts still left in the cooler and lines, but these trannys take so much fluid that it's pretty negligible. Good luck.
I'll probably do it at work. I work in a oil refinery. Do you think a 1/4erd 55 gal drum will hold all the fluid? After I dump the tranny I'll send the old fluid back through the slop system to get refined agian.

Your TC and pan should drain about 14 quarts, give or take a quart, so you'll be cutting it a little close on that 1/4 55gal drum, you should be fine.

Thanks for asking! I haven't gotten a chance to haul it yet becuase I'm currently in the process of beefing up my truck to make it better equipped. On the list: install my longtube headers, class V hitch receiver, Derale tranny pan, tranny temp gauge, stacked plate tranny cooler. I'll keep all of you guys posted on my progress on my other thread
