For my truck in sig, when diving in my field which is relatively flat, at times I get a loud "crack" coming from the front end. This happens driving SLOW (3-5 mph) and only when one wheel goes over a bump and is higher than the other wheel. I have just changed balljoints (all 4) and new front shocks....coils look fine. I'm thinking something to do with the axle? I can hit a pothole at 30mph and all is fine. Like I said its only driving slow when the wheels are off balance.
check the upper and lower control arm bolts at frame. maybe one of them is not tight enough. I had a loud cracking sound from the front left of my expedition when I backed out of my driveway. I looked under it and I could see evidence of movement at one of the bolts, since I've tightened it the crack is gone. good luck.
I have read (on this site probably) that sometimes the rivets holding the front sub-frame and radius arms (and probably other stuff) can loosen and allow movement. Fix was to replace rivets w/grade 8 bolts.
Don't have personal experience w/this fix, but I am looking at a similar problem and may give it a try. According to the link I posted yesterday (if I understand it right) the recommended procedure is to replace the rivet w/a bolt 1/16" larger - IOW drill out the holes after removing the rivet. This may be a pre-emptive attempt to address any ovaling of the hole.
