After all of this positive talk about DeskTop Dyno, I thought I'd give it a try. I bought Dyno2000 from Summit since I didn't see it on the Motorhaven site.
What a nice program! Only $40. In no time I was adding headers, swapping single-plane for a 2-plane intake, hotter cam, porting, larger valves, etc. It was fast and easy!
One interesting observation I made was that when I held everything else constant except for the 360/390 stroke change, the peak power really doesn't change much, it only shifts the rpm at which it peaks by a few hunderd. That makes sense because the power is limited by airflow -- heads, cam, etc. Of course you'll have to rev it higher by holding it in the lower gears longer or installing 4.56 rear-end gears.
So, that sort of answers part of the 360/390 question. Of course, you'll benefit from the stronger 390 rods when you rev it.
All of this to say "What a great program!"

I have to dis agree on the rod thing. The long rods will hold p great under racing conditions as long as the proper precautions have been taken. And, the rods are serviced properly. That is just my opinion.
I dunno scotty. In my opinion I would not use the 360 rod in any high perf engine I would build. Even with a good shot peen and ARP bolts it still isn't even close to being as strong as any 390 rod. The difference in rod length is minimal but the strength difference is pretty big. There are many that feel the same way you do but I just can't see the benefit. Even if it was a 5HP difference I would gladly give it up for the extra strength.
Hmmm... The only experience I have with the 360 (352, actually) rods was when I was in junior high and got an old junk engine to take apart. As an experiment, I put one of the rods in a vise and tried to twist it with a pipe wrench. It was very, very easy. It easily went through three or four revolustions and didn't break. Made an interesting paper weight, too. ;-)
