New engine running hot ok?

Just rebuilt the engine. The engine is NOT overheating just running hotter than normal. The water pump is fairly new and I put a bigger after market radiator during the rebuild. Is it typical for a new engine to run warmer until it breaks in?

I doubt that a fresh rebuilt engine would run noticeably hotter, and if it tried to, the thermostat should maintain it at the regulated temperature anyhow. Did you change the thermostat or temperature sending unit? A new thermostat might open at a little higher temperature, while a new sending unit might read a little higher than the old one.

New thermostat (same temp as old) and new sending unit. My temp guage is now strait up and down, or at the half way point. I think I'll buy an after market guage with actual degress of temp.

I would recommend the straight mechanical Bourdon tube type gauge. It has a long tube that comes out the back of the gauge and an adaptor that screws into the intake manifold (or anywhere else you want to install it that has a 1/2" pipe thread). I think this style is more reliable since there's no electrics involved, and it even reads when you turn the engine off. Note that the temperature will increase a little after the engine is shut down due to the lack of coolant flow, causing more combustion chamber heat than usual to convect up to the sender.

Yes it is very normal for a new tight motor to run hotter then normal until its broken in completely. just keep an eye on things, and dont run the motor over 55mph for the first 500 miles. be sure to run Rotella oil 30wt right now. this will help protect everything and allow the rings to seat. oil change intervals should be 500, 1500,3000. once you hit 3000 mark you can run synthetic or regular oils. after the 500 mile mark use 10-40 rotella

Ditto, I'd also try advancing the timing too, if you've set it to the factory settings. (Talking about the old "retarded" 6*BTDC)
