Rear bearings
Today, my brother drove the F100 to Fun Ford since I was taking the Cougar. When we got there he mentioned that he heard some growling in the back while on the freeway. Either axle bearings or pinion bearing. Ok, it is a '65 so maybe I should just change them out. Axle bearings are straight forward in that I pull the axles out, press off the old and press on the new. However, what do I need for doing the pinion bearing besides taking the pumpkin apart?

Mike, Dig into it yourself, maybe you brother noticed something that you had become used to or didn't feel it was bad enough to be an issue. We don't see pinion bearing questions often, so look at the axle, or other areas.
That isn't a high failure area.

I agree with Jowilker, pull the axels and check the bearings first. if there is any movement sideways on the bearings they are on their way to heaven. may run another 10,000 or quit tomorrow. they do growl when they are going out. dutch

Then I will check out the axle bearings first and maybe replace. I do not doubt my brother because he is a top mechanic and if there is one person I would trust, and so should everyone else, it would be him. Besides he knows Ford trucks and has enough of them.
