I pulled the pitman arm off my truck this afternoon after nearly crashing into another car from the bumpsteer. I have no idea what this arm is out of but it has the part number DF5 MS467. That's on one side, the other side has the numbers. 1938513. I know the sector hole is 1 1/8" (slightly smaller than the original 56's) and the length from hole to hole is 7 1/4" The stock pitman arm for 56's is 6 inches. I hoping maybe I can purchase the 6" pitman, otherwise, I'm cutting this sucker and welding it up. It's been nice knowing you guys. LOL..
Albuq- I don't need the stock arm, I have one. Someone changed out the steering box (if you recall, you told me it was a Saginaw box). I'm trying to find out what arm I have. The stock pitman arm won't fit on my steering box sector shaft. The stock hole is too big. Your right, pitman arms are not cheap. I guess they don't sell that many so when they do, they sock it to ya. I found out the MS467 means Manual Steering, What DF5 means, I don't know. I did a search and some came up with Buick and even Diesel???? Haven't got a clue at this point. I'm not giving up on this steering box or pitman arm. Where's Number dummy?????
I havent seen a posting by Bill in a few weeks? Has anyone heard from him? Is he alright?
How is your relationship with your local parts stores? Any chance of them letting you roam around the shelves and try and match things up? When I was trying to find moled radiator hoses for my truck the guys let me have the run of the aisles to try and find what I needed. Either that or head to a pull-a-part type yard and see what you an find. I have no ideas what the numbers mean, they don't really seem like a GM # but I'm not sure.
Thanks bobby. Actually, I'm on really good terms with the local parts place, since I spent large amounts of money with them in the past LOL.... I went through the computer and inventory yesterday. They are bunch of old circle track racers and even they said to just have arm shortened and I'm good to go. So, this morning I'm stopping bye my hotrod builder friends shop and having him shorten it a bit. Will let you guys know how it comes out and rides.
Thanks Ed.
I just got back from my buddies shop and he cut and welded my pitman arm. Now it's 6 inches hole to hole and now my drag link is hortizonal. I took it around the block and I noticed much improvement. Haven't hit any big bump so keeping my fingers crossed. I also spoke to my buddy who has built several f100's in the past and actually owns one. He told me regardless what you do or what type of drop axle you use, you'll have some bumpsteer with the drop axle. Maybe he just wants to install a Mustang II front end in my truck
Great news!! I'm glad you were able to get it driveable again.
I think that as long as you have it horizontal then you're about as good as you can get. I think there will always be a little bump steer but hopefully its a non issue.
