Starting my 390

I have a '68 390 and can't get the timing figured out to get it to start. I am trying to start it at 8 degrees BTDC and it backfired(I had the distributor out and the motor was turned over with it out). The manual I have says the firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 with the pass. side bank being #1-4. Is this correct? Can anyone please help me out? Thanks...

The firing order is correct. Are you sure you're lining the distributor with the #1 piston on the compression stroke? Another trick I used was to actually time it a little early (in other words, I set it so the rotor was a little in front of #1 to give me more range to adjust the advance). It took me a few tries but I eventually got it. Stay with it.

make sure your're at compression stroke on #1 cylinder when you dropped the distributor back in.make sure wires are routed correctly to each cylinder.when cranking, give the dist. a twist for some advance. it should fire right up if your ignition system is working fine(check this first).

And make sure your putting the wires in the distributer conter-clock-wise, I made a quick look in a book and saw a picture going clock-wise, after a week of backfiring I looked back in the book and noticed it was to a 6 and not a v8, oops. :7
