Navigators and later years of the first generation Expy had a system where you can undo the rear seat bar that removes or tilts it forward but can hold it up in the tilt forward position to give rear cargo room without removing the heavy seat. Unfortunately, my '97 has no such devise and to retro fit factory parts would take hundreds of dollars. In doing a forum search, I read that guys were able to buy a non factory kit available on eBay for around forty dollars.
Some have even given item numbers to assist in the search at eBay but because all of the threads dealing with this are too old, I've come up empty on the eBay search.
Some guys use a two by four to prop it but this is unsafe in a forward collision. I devised a system where you use two anchor chain shackles that can fit around the two front floor seatmounts. Replace the threaded hitchpin with threaded rod that will screw in place (mine is 5/16). The other end is bent 90 degrees and goes in one of two existing holes in the seat frame near the hooks with a wing nut for quick removal.
The shackle will always remain in the hole/seat anchor in the floor and will share that space with the seat anchor hook when the seat is in. This will keep the seat secured in the front floor anchors in case of a sudden stop, where the heavy seat might go flying forward over the middle row in case of a panic stop. I have eyebolts in the othe hole on either side of the seat frame to strap and secure the rest of the seat in the upright position, the other end of the strap snap hooked to the two child seat anchors. When the seat is stored in my garage, it hangs on the wall from the same eyebolts, folded up and out of the way.
I'm still interested in finding this forty dollar kit on eBay or a store, if anyone can help me with that, it would be interesting to see if it was more effective and convenient than the system I figured out.
Thanks,
Stephen
They used to sell a bracket that would hold the seat up but I couldn't find it anywhere. Maybe a liability thing. If the car rolls the seat will be loose and could kill you.,
