the transmission is essentially the same, but the output shaft and tail housings are different. and in order to swap the tailshafts, the whole thing has to come apart. i did this job after taking apart my 4x4 aod and finding most of the bushings and the planetary assy was shot. so i used a good aod from a crown vic and used its clutch/ drive assys/ torque convertor and pump with the 4x4 tailshaft and governor. put in a new od band and seal kit and it works fine.
if you decide to do this, make sure the mustang valve body is the same as the 89. the later (after 86?) did not use a 3-4 servo. if the mustang has a 3-4 servo, eliminate it and use the 89 vb.
