hi all I just went to look at a truck today. I knew the truck had a few problems shifting into second gear to begin with but now that ive driven it i have more of an idea of whats up.
ok so the truck is an 84 f-250 single cab 6.9l diesel with the four speed manual (T-19?). anyways the problem i encounterd was the clutch pedle was really soft to begin with, and when you threw it into any gear it whould make the truck shake at the same speed as the engine, only really noticable at idle (it wouldnt move like the clutch was gone it would just shake). so im wondering if it really needs a new clutch or if its just a slave or master cylinder? Now to disengage this clutch it wound have to be compleatle to the floor. if i bought this truck it would be more or less a beater truck so im looking for a quick fix.
any thoughts or previous experience would be appreciated, thanks!
I'm having a little trouble understanding exactly what your problem is. If you can get it in gear and the truck wont move, the clutch is bad or the tranny is bad. If you are having trouble getting it in gear, it could be one of the hydraulic parts, or the firewall could be torn which is a common problem on these hydro clutch operated trucks.
yeah sorry, reading that the second time its hard to understand.
ok so, the clutch feels really soft, it only disengages on the last inch of the pedal stroke. it is hard to slam the shifter into second. and when it is in gear, and just sitting(not moving), with the clutch in, the truck shakes pretty good, with the idle of the truck. third and fourth gear arent that bad to get into but i couldnt even get it into first.
hope that explains it better, im just looking to see if anyone has had this problem and what was the solution, weather a clutch master cylinder or a slave, or a whole new clutch kit.
Well if it moves okay when it is in gear, then I would be looking at your hydraulics. 1st gear will be harder to get into since it isn't synchronized. It's a granny gear and should only be accessed when at a complete stop. The shaking when in gear with the cltuch depressed could be due to the cltuch not fully disengaging and the truck is trying to move. You may want to flush the old fluid out, and check the firewall for tears around where the clutch master mounts. Have someone push on the clutch pedal while you watch to see if the firewall moves. You might also have an adjustable pushrod on your CM that could need tweeking.
