Used Camry Solara nearly totaled by tire tread separation, which ripped out an engine wiring harness and bent up the fender. Tire had adequate tread depth, but was dry rotted.
I had a blowout going about 70 in my LTD once. It was on hot, dry highway. After that experience, I'll never use re-treaded tires again. The tread peeled off like a food wrapper. It felt like I ran over a land mine.
If you have comprehensive insurance, it should cover all of the damage except the tire. Comprehensive coverage pays for damage "other than collision" and a car cannot collide with itself.
I posted this for Gevans17. I cant wait to hear the whole story on it myself, he should be on a little later to give a few more details. I have never seen a blowout tear any wiring or anything like that out before.
Our E350 based box trucks at work have had rear blow outs twice tearing the wheel house out of the box. About 10 years ago this happened on one of those small shuttle buses....tore the wheel well out. Would have been a nothing story if a 3 year old hadn't been standing on the well in front of his mom on the bus.
So, ya gonna run those old tires much longer, or go to the scrappy and buy used ones for $5?
Not my car, but owned by a friend. Bought used 2 weeks previously from a private party, but at least he had the car inspected by a Toyota dealer before he bought it. Toyota gave it a clean bill of health..said it needed a tune up!
Owner goes back to Toyota after mishap. At first, dealer told him "too bad", but after I pointed out to the service rep that the tire was obviously dry rotted, Toyota dealer finally agreed to repair it for the cost of the parts only. Tire had adequate remaining tread, but had many small cracks on sidewall. Tread separated on interstate at high speed. Luckily, no one was killed.
