found the culprit

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. Replaced everything from the key on down and finally took out the distributor and replaced the pickup coil.
Runs great. Thanks again for the help.

Sorry for the delay in answering, my truck quit one day while idling and would't start after that. i replaced everything from the ignition switch on down the line with no result until i finally pulled the distributor and replaced the coil pickup.
I still have a problem with "Ford's better idea" of having a mechanical key rod activating the ignition switch. Mine won't engage because the little wheel won't turn far enough. It is a giant hassle to take off the top collar and replace the $9.99 part so i am going to put a bump starter under the dash.
