Welcome to the forum.
Are you saying that it does it sitting still in reverse or only rolling backwards when in reverse? If when rolling backwards while in reverse, I might suspect a u-joint.

I think it happens -- correct me if I'm wrong -- but I think it happens when he is idling in Reverse.

Can you tell where the sound is coming from?

Critical difference. Either way, I would have your reverse drum in your tranny checked.

lol, no. It's a gear inside the transmission. If the reverse drum is going bad, it may make noise when engaged.

And I apologize if I sounded callous -- I didn't mean to. I was trying to get a clearer picture of the symptoms you are noticing.

loony2000 thanks for your replys. im new to the fte forum so il be lurning who the wise guys are soon enough. the sound to me seems more like a rotating noise meaning if i back up slow it squeeks slow and if i go quick its quicker. mabey i screwed up something in the rear brakes but i think the noise would be there always. what do you think a tranny rebuild would cost? i was wondering if the bushings in the leafsprings could be bad? is there a way the check them? p.s. im the king of scarcasum (and the queen of spelling) thanks shawn

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the rear u-joint. It was dry and nearly seized, thus the squeeking! Of course, I too rebuilt my rear brakes first.

I'll agree with deo 59 sounds like one of the u joints. You can check them by putting your truck in neutral with the engine off and the tires blocked make it would even be safer if some one is there with you. Then you just get under the truck and wiggle your drive line at each of the u joints. you may not hear the noise but if there is any play (wiggle in them at all) they are probably bad.

your 4wd u joints are actually non serviable CV boots you should just have 2 u joints on your driveshaft from the tranny to the rear end. I;m new to the site i don't know of any links. What i would do is go to autozone or oreillys and get a haynes or chilton repair manual. they are about $20 and worth every penny. Good luck

Define everyday guy? It is not technically difficult but mine were so seized into the drive shaft I had to heat them and beat them out.

The drive shat removal is easy, four bolts holding the rear u-joint clamp to the pinion yoke. Once those are off slide the shaft forward, drop the rear out of the yoke and slide it out of the transmission.

The U-joint removal is about as easy. pull the retainer clips from each side and then either press the joints out or use a socket and a hammer and push the joint out. As ff1416 said, get a Haynes manual and the procedure is in there.

Good luck.
