hello, new to this.i just got a 1988 ranger 4x4 with a 2.9 in it.thought i had a tranny prob but now think its engine related,i need someone smarter than me.in the mornings when i first drive it ,it runs awesome.then as it reaches normal operating temps it will act as if it is missing,it will run so badly that it will downshift into 2nd and shift in and out of 2nd,3rd,im pulling out hair
First off is the check engine light on? How does it idle when it's warm? How about off idle acceleration when warm? Does it clear up after sitting for an hour or so or does it have to sit overnight before it behaves?
sounds to me like the plugs are getting to hot maybe they are old and due for a change go ahead and replace plugs,Wires, Cap, Rotor you should be fine.
plugs, wires new, idle when warm rough(like bad plugs/wires)no check engine light, live in iowa so right now it wont cool in an hour, but two and yes, runs normal for a bit.until it warms up again
U have probably mechanical/hydravlical problems with your tranny. Sometimes when tranny reaches normal temperature ATF pressure drops down. I do net know what caused it, becouse I did full tranny rebuild (including pump repare and polishing) and problem went away for 100 K.
Cryodiagnostics!! Get a can of keyboard duster and keep it in the truck. When it starts acting up take the can, hold it upside down so the frost comes out, and spray the coil down for about 10 seconds, Start it back up and see if that cured it, If not pick the next component and blast it. Keeping trying to start it and after you cool the component that is causing the problem it should run like it does in the morning. You will have to adjust your spray time smaller components will take less of a blast, Plastic more than a metal one.
