coils

At this point I"m still checking out the right way to do the electrical upgrade on my 300 6 cyl. and something occured to me last night . does anyone know what the standard voltage is on a coil off the shelf. some of the custom distributors i'v checked out and priced come with an internal voltage regulator and are 50,000 volts. i'm just a bit curious what the plain ole coil that is on this 66 is. three out of four of the companies i have checked out want to know what the rise and duration of the RV cam i am going to put in it. so it must be important. sure wish i knew more about the electrical than i do. Since no has responded to this I thought I'd chime in and at least bump this to the top. I don't know what the old coils put out, but you don't have to worry about overdoing the voltage as long as you have good high performance wires to match the coil(so you don't get any arcs. More voltage is better, usually, and 50,000 is pretty awesome. Some of the benefits of higher voltage are the ability to run a wider plug gap, easier cold starting, and better fuel economy due to more thorough combustion. One thing I think you have to do is bypass the pink resistor wire and make sure you are getting a full 12 volts to the new system. The reason they want to know what cam you have is not because of the voltage but is so they can set the range for the centrifugal advance.
