Air in fuel system test

<o></o>I searched and found lots of good info. (Slight information overload! lol) I seen where they recommend using a clear line on the fuel return, so we installed one but not sure if it’s the correct fuel return. Is the one coming from the fuel filter to the injector just below the filter. We had lots of air moving through this hose. I don’t think this should be, but what bothers me is the air was moving from the filter too the injector.

Did this test tell me anything? And if so, where do I look for air infiltration? IIRC the selector switch was one area, and the pickup tube in the tank was another area.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Run a return line into a clear jug. Like a washer fluid jug. Make sure the return line is down in the fuel so you can get a good look at the air bubbles. Seeing "air bubbles" in a clear return line isn't uncommon on every engine ever built. Fuel can foam or bubble on it's own. That is why the fuel line from the filter base to the return line on the motor is pretty important. You don't what any air or foam in the pump if you can help it. That line is doing it's job.

Those bubbles don't always mean that the fuel system is sucking air. This f uel with all it's additives will foam up. Pour some in a mason jar pretty fast and you will see it.

Is the motor running ok?

No it’s not running good. It idles rough and will just die. The return line didn’t have any fuel when removed. The one on the filter and the one that goes to the IP. Is this normal? I’ll run the hose into a can and see.

Am I supposed to use the hoes that goes on the IP?

you can buy a tire chuck ,like the ones used to inflate tires screw a fitting into it and attach a section of clear hose and place it into a jug with the engine running place the chuck on the shrader valve on the filter housing if it has air bubbles in it the system is ingesting air

OK do this. Get your jug of fuel and run the return from the back of the motor in it also run your fuel pump out of that same jug. Basicly run the engine on a jug of fuel.

When ever I have a problem like this I seperate the motor from the truck. If it runs fine on a jug of fuel then you know you have a problem in the truck. It is a process of elimination and don't be suprised if you don't more then one problem.

Sounds like you may not be getting enough fuel and don't get to caught up in pressure. Volumn is what you need. You should have some pressure but you need to make sure you have a good return flow.
