i was coming back to work pulling a 24 ft trailor and my gas light came on, i knew i had 50 miles so i ket going i had 20 or so miles,(im 16hrs out of town by the way in good ole PA) just so happens every gas station does not sell diesel and then someone was t-boned ahead of me and traffic didnt move for a while, anyway my truck got down to 5 miles and started surging and acting like it was running on 4 cyl, is this normal,??\by the way i got to a gas station with 1 left on the dash
I did the same thing last Wednesday. I was pulling a 24' stock trailer loaded with 12 cows. My dash said that I had 50 miles to empty, the next gas station was only about 20 miles away. When I got to the station it started surging. I had 4 miles left when on my dash.
I did that last week as well. At first, I thought I was havin a problem with my truck. I didn't think it was actually empty. Anyways, made it to the station and pumped 32.2 gallons in my 32 gallon tank! Kinda scary for me. I wont be letting it get that empty any more.
I ran mine past 0 the last night. It never acted funny I do have a 91 gal aux tank so I wasnt worried about running out. I got 585 miles on that tank. Last trip i didn't get but 555 driving the same way. maybe my milage is getting better.
mine has let me go down to 0 before acting up and the last time it did the computer said i was 33 miles to empty. As soon as it beeps, i head to the pump.
Mine is an 05 XLT so no computer. I have got the LOW FUEL which replaces the odo on the dash. Is 50 miles the generally accepted distance remaining when that happens? I think my tank is 29 gal with the short bed and that's about what it took.

i've got the 29 gallon tank too, and i'd be hard pressed to get 50miles after my low FUEL light comes, especially if i was towing.
i'm not sure how much reserve there actually is, but i've pumped 29-31 gallons into it many times so i'm sure i was close to empty.
BTW guys, it's not a good idea to run empty, very hard on injectors/pump etc..
You're starving your injectors of fuel when you do that and getting air in the system. Your fuel is what lubricates the injectors! Not a good thing to run them dry.
Exactly. I heard it could be a major deal depending on how starved they get. Be nice to know the "red line" after the Low Fuel comes on. With my other gasser car, it's published info.
My wife ran mine almost dry last week (it started surging and sputtering on her) and so she pulled over and called me. She only made it 7 miles after the light came on before the sputtering started. The weird thing is that I could only get 28.5 gallons into it, normal is like 30. The last time this happened I was on the highway and could only get about 25 miles after the light came on until it started sputtering. After all that, I carried a 5 gallon can filled with #2 just in case last weekend on my trip through the Sierras.
There was another thread here last week about trucks going into "safe" mode when they start to get low on fuel. I've never experienced it but I saw several that had experienced it. I wonder if it's computer related or sucking air related. I have a fuel pressure gauge so I can see it happen, but for those who don't how would they know? Maybe someone with one of the later model trucks that has a fuel pressure gauge and has experienced this phenom will chime in and we can get a correlation.
power starts dropping around 1/8 tank. the computer limits power output, as long as your stock it will work fine. im not sure how a tuned truck will work though.
a friend of mine run out of juice ruined his pump on a diesel excursion would have been funny if I wasn't in the back seat we fixed it in a motel parking lot after a tow in to Bunky LA.
