- Convert the truck's ignition to the duraspark II (DSII). Your '86 will most likely have the TFI kinda like an early throttle-body/EFI sorta thing. Worked fine when new, not so great when it gets older. Why DSII & not HEI or whatever? Well, its cheap, easy (manuals EVERYWHERE have diagrams that show the set-up - look for any ford engine from '75 to '83) & you can get parts right off the shelf just about anywhere. You'll need the distributor, module & harness. The harness is the hardest to get (wrecking yard, off of any truck - regardless of engine), unless you make your own.
- Use an older model carb, especially if you do an ignition swap. Your engine most likely has the "feed-back" carb that has to go with the TFI. Just use a Carter YF off of an early '70s truck & you'll be fine. If you're going to use another type of carb (1bbl, 2bbl or 4bbl), read through what people have done here & also check the Ford Six site. I'm using an autolite 2150, but then I also did a intake/exhaust manifold change as well.
- I would get a manual (factory if you can) that has info for the mid-seventy's trucks & set-up your engine compartment like that. Also keep reading & posting here, there's a lot of info & smart people who've done some pretty cool stuff. Pick their brains, its fun for all of us!

Hope this gets you going.

You'll cook those plugs blue with too small of a jet in the carb.
What makes you think your 300 is on its way out?
Edwin made a good post. Very interesting.
I'm not disagreeing with him at all. After reading his post I dont think I know enough to disagree with him.
But... I think if you understood all the parts of your EFI system, you'd keep it intact.
You'll get better milage, better starting and generally better operation at all Rpms.
EFI was created to eliminate some problems Carb's couldnt solve.
On the subject of keeping the emission controls intact, think of it this way: "That's my Air your dirtying up with that nasty carburator!"
Fix what you have. Dont re-engineer yourself back into the dark ages.
