airbag sensor

I have a 2000 Explorer and the airbag light will come on when the sensor underneath the driver's side seat gets knocked off it's mount. With the key off, I lay it level and then slide it back on the mount and it works fine. Can anyone explain to me why an airbag sensor would be mounted under the seat>

you have a number of air bag sensors throughout the car.

together they decide if the vehicle is being hit or hitting something.
