Blown Fe

Here's an idea that needs some advice as far as getting parts. I have an 8-71 blower just sitting around and the idea of making a huge a$$ Fe has ran through the grey matter inside my head. Putting the two together has also given me the chills. Where can I find intake manifold related parts to mate this behemoth manifold up to the top end of the engine? I'm thinking somewhere in 520 cu. in. range ( genesis block, scat bottem end, low compression, ect...). There is a youtube video that I have found that somebody did that in a 32' highboy, here's the link ( hopefully it works ).

I WANT ONE, MUUHAAHAAHAA!!!!!!!!

There must be some old blower manifolds out there somewhere, but if not you could always make a custom sheetmetal intake.

Hmmm must be nice to have a 8-71 just "hanging around". Weiand, HM, BDS, Dove all made blower intakes for the 6-71's. I'm not certain about the 8-71 and how they differ. Think they need a spacer. I betchya Larry (Freightrain) can clue you in where to find one possibly and how to set it up. He runs one on that wicked black Galaxie of his. I see them on epay often. They made these for just about every FE head out there so check your applications. I do aluminum polishing so if you ever want it shiney give me a ring. I can also recommend the Genesis block. It's a purdy chunk of iron.

Blue Thunder makes the 6-71 version I have on my 390. Nice piece, and included a 3" spacer under blower to raise enough to run a stock dizzy(too cheap to buy good one).

I got my 6-71 for FREE since it was "laying around at buddies place" LOL!! It was brand spank'n new(In the box), so I had to cut the shafts down, remove the extra gears then thru race sponsor got a full BDS drive set up for it. Just bolted it all together.........yes it was that easy!! 6 lbs of boost to a stocker 390 and it SCREAMS!!! Some day I'll be able to afford a good bottom end(stock '68 cast pistons right now).

Go to my gallery, look in 428FE and you'll see picture of car.

I've had real DUMB dreams of putting that motor in a Tbucket(including the 4spd). Maybe someday.............

Your galaxie is way bitchin, and I bet it does scream! I'm gonna look to see if I can't find some manifolds for an 8-71.

I see Holley showing manifolds listed as "6-71/8-71" - meaning they fit both superchargers.

Not sure if it's a mounting thing or not, but looks like they are physically the same, except the 8-71 is a little longer.

that is the conclusion that I'm getting with, many of the manifolds either fit both, so hopfully the one that I have will work. It looks like it came off of an old Detroit diesel. We'll see what happens.

All Detroits had "blowers" as they had to to run. The "6" or "8" was the no of cylinders. Meaning the 6-71 was six cylinders with 71 cu in of displacment, likewise the 8 cyl with 71 cu in. Then the 6v71 was a "V" configuration instead of inline. Detroit made ALOT of varations to fit many chassis'. The blowers were larger volume for the larger displacement. I've never reallly seen a 6 and 8 beside each other to know if the body was the same or just the end bells made the "8" longer. Meaning it will still bolt on the same as the "6". My blower still has the side tags on the case to aid in hanging it on an inline 6. With the spacer I used, they didn't need to be removed as it cleared everything. Mine is completely box stock(no teflon on blades) and works perfect for 7 yrs now.

It's not a "8V-71" is it?

All the eight cylinder motors were V's. No straight 8's that I know of. They made V4's and inline 4's, V6 and inline 6. V8, 12, 16's. Standard and reverse rotation models to fit just about anything.

The inline 6's were 238hp(rated), the 8's were 318hp. That was a common way to denote what you had.

Larry, from what I've read about this, the 6v-71 and 8v-71 blowers are physically different than the 6-71 and 8-71 ... and no manifolds exist for auto applications for the "V" blowers.

Of course, I'm just reading what I found on google

Well I have to say this is all pretty interesting. I never realized you could use a 6-71 or 8-71 off a truck. Doing a quick search on fleabay you can find used 6-71's for $250-450. Blue thunder sells a FE blower intake for $709 via Barry at Survival. Looks pretty doable for under or around $2k complete I'd think. Maybe I should sell my tunnelport stuff and go with a blower?? I could get everything I need and a set of heads to boot. Makes one think......

Funny what gets lost over 40 years of time, eh?

I never realized it either - and only just read about it when this thread came up.

Art....I'll have to talk to my one buddy in the big truck club as he's a long time DD guy(parts/sales, etc.). I know mine is a inline model because of the lip on one side for hanging on the block and getting the bolts started. I wonder if the case is the same, only the end bells are different. The end bells aren't used anyway, so shouldn't matter?

Glenn, don't forget the drive assy. That's another 1500 or so, then carb linkage $200, fuel lines(prebent if you want them) $200, etc. It really adds up quick, so don't put too low of a budget on it. I have a BDS catalog with price list that will really scare ya!!!

Good thing with a blower is good heads are not needed, so all the money can be spent on other things.

If one could do it right, you could have a pretty sweet blower setup the rivals that of a brand new one for not a whole lot of money ( if looks are not of any concern ). Plus it being on a Fe, power output would competitive if not better. I was planning on throwing this thing together with a 428 that i have and shoving it into my 66' F100. Take the extra hood and cut a huge hole in it, paint it flat back with the rest of the truck being old jamican yellow. Who's got sandbags for the back?!!
