Question Aero Cooling System Airlock ?

In one thread someone mentioned cooling system airlock, in heater core specifically. I'm having no luck yet searching Aerostar forum for airlock or air lock. Is it more than just usual problem? Meaning do you NEED to remove hoses or fill through hoses? I'm thinking about my 'new' '97 4.0 here, with front & rear air.

I am quite aware of airlocks and always ran my 3.0 Aero after cooling system service with cap off and both heaters on full until I couldn't get any more coolant in (10 minutes or more). I've done this twice in the parking lot of my favorite mechanic's shop because I know how to do it right even if they don't!! And I ain't gonna drive without full cooling system. I learned on European cars like Jaguars, Fiats, etc.

Most of the time the problem occurs because of a leaky old radiator cap which does not allow the coolant to be sucked back into the radiator when the engine cools down.

If you have drained the entire system, you need to warm & cool the engine a few times with the heater on full, topping up as required up to the filler neck. Ford owners manual recommends turning the cap to the first stop only to allow air to purge at low system pressure for the first warm up. After that topping up can be done at the expansion tank.

Make sure the overflow tube is sealed tightly and is not swollen or leaky. I had problems where the system would get bubbles and I guess the hose had soaked up oil fumes and swollen. It swelled enough that it did not seal tightly agains the barb on the filler neck. I replaced the hose and clamped it with a zip tie. No more problems.

thanks for the comments.. just trying to learn any special procedures this Aero requires. Sounds like just normal fill & run to me. I normally check mine after the 1st cool down and top up as needed. Some cars need extraordinary procedures to bleed air out, like jacking the front end way up in the air on 1980+ Fiat Spider 2000s. Others remove a hose to let air out, or bleed at bleeder nipple like some Hondas & Jags.

Aeroman59 - I don't quite get your comments. First warm up I always do with cap OFF.. I'll read the owner's manual tho...

and I don't think my '97 has an expansion tank per se... only the overflow coolant recovery reservoir which is not the place to top up the engine. (my imported Ford 2.8 Injection engine did have a true expansion tank with a pressure cap on it, so do 4.0 Cherokees for example.)

And thanks Bear River, when my overflow hose did that i pulled it outta the tank, turned it around and put the good lower end onto the radiator.

I'm pretty sure the manual says top up the recovery bottle when cold. I agree normally warm up an engine with the cap off. However when I tried this on mine (3L) as soon as the thermostat opened, it overflowed & made a mess! I then topped up via the recovery bottle & all's well (mostly).
I read the manual (glove box) & it actually has a quite detailed procedure on how to top up the coolant level correctly.
Suggest have a quick look-see!
