FE number question
its in a 1968 f-250 so I am wondering if its a 390 or 360?
I read somewhere else here that someone said that it could be told by the number under the oil filter. anyway the number there is hard to read and I think it says 6823 but I am uncertin about the 6 it might be a 8 couldn't tell.
any help from the experts I'd sure apreciate it, thanks!
That number you're talking about is the date code, has nothing to do with what the engine is.
I would guess that it really says 8B23. That would be Feb. 23 1968 and sounds origional for your truck.
To tell if it's a 360 or a 390, do a search on "dowel" or "stroke" in this forum, you need to measure the stroke and it's been talked about a lot here.

the dowel or a coat hanger in the cylinder test is easiest way to tell stroke. simply pull a spark plug. Bring that piston to TDC (all the way up). Mark dowel (or hanger). Turn crank to BDC (all the way down). Mark dowel again. Pull dowel out then measure the distance.
3.5" is 352, 360 or 361 FT crank.
3.784" is 390, 406, or 427.
3.79" is 391 FT engine
3.984" is 410 or 428.
The 390 406 and 427 compared to 391 is nearly the same and is nearly indistiguishable.
The most common of dispacements for our use (truck) is 3.5 = 360, 3.784 = 390, 3.984 = 428. The 410 and 428 engines are getting harder and more expensive to find all the time. 360's and 390's are fairly plentiful.
Sorry for the long post. I just get carried away sometimes.
