How many times can a value cover gasket be reuse when removing the cover.
The reason i ask is because i plan on changing the glow plugs and more this weekend and i know that both covers have been off 3 times by the dealership and don't know if they installed new.
Checked with the Ford Dealership on price, And they want $64.00 per gasket, Not a problem if i need them, Just making sure before i start, Thanks for any help.
What Kris said. They are a plastic assembly with an o-ring groove that provides the sealing. As long as the o-ring isn't hardened up it should be ok.
That said, if you've had the truck long enough to have the VC's off three times for whatever reason, new gaskets now are cheaper than the labor to R&R the VC's later on to fix a leak. I recommend new ones and while you are at it, wiring harnesses underneath.
Also order the tech's to retorque the rocker pedastals and injectors and be willing to pay the extra time for that. They loosen up a bit over time and it's well worth the extra money for that service.
20 ftlb for the rockers and 120 inchlb for the injectors.
What they said. Theoretically there a lifetime part, just like all those bushings, bearings, ball joints, & u joints that never need greasing on your truck. If they seem ok you can probably re-use them, just make sure you have a spare vehicle available, the parts store is open, and the gasket is in stock before you tear everything apart.
Hey Kwik, I've read this from you several times about things loosening up under there. How loose do they get? Is it worth pulling everything apart for no other reason than to tighten everything back up? Or should I wait until the next time I have a reason to be under the hood? I've only got 230,000 on my 02.
Kwik, I made myself a reminder to re-torque the rockers and injectors when having the VC off because of what you have mentioned in other threads, Along with the wiring harnesses.

I had 80,000 miles on the engine when I did the re-torque and every injector took about 1/6 turn to tighten up again and about 1/3 of the rocker pedastal bolts were between 1/8 and 1/4 turn before the torque wrench clicked.
IMO it will be well worth the time and effort to R&R your VC's again to do this.
