Towing Capacities
I think the Chevy is rated for 12K pounds... Is that a stretch?
When you go there make sure to go to the "Features and Specs" tab and then select "Engines and Performance" tab.

A 2002 Excursion (BTW the SAME year the 8.1L was available in the Burb) has an 11K towing capacity with the V10 and 4.30 gears...so yeah the burb has a leg up on the marketing boys...BUT you have to get the 4.10's to get 12K# towing. I wouldn't personally tow more than 10K behind any SUV...but that's just me...over 10K# range is clearly crew cab pickemup territory in my book...but that's just my opinion.
My great buddy has a 2003 8.1L burb BUT only has teh 3.73's so his towing capacity is NOT 12K. But to be honest here...the Burb kicks the living snot out of the Ex's in the payload department!!! Take a look...sure the Burb is LIGHTER to begin with so there is more room to hit its 8600# GVWR...the Ex is a portly sucker with whimpy springs and hits its GVWR rather quickly...so from a pure payload standpoint the Burb is a much better vehicle...plus that 8.1L is a strong puller...I wouldn't have a problem owning either...well other than I don't look good in a girly man bowtie...thus my blue oval! LOL
Hope these links help.
