[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Nov-02 AT 00:34 AM (EST)]I bought a hi po 390 four barrel intake from a salvage yard and have it installed on the motor. When buying a new thermostat for it if found that no three ninety thermostat would fit. It had to have a 352 thermostat which is a quarter of an inch larger to fit the larger hole. So I guess I must have a 352 intake instead of a 390. The question is, will that make any difference in the engine build? I could not tell any difference in they way it looks except for the need for a bigger thermo. I guess I'll have to find a water neck with a larger recess to accomodate it. thanks for the info.
And one more question while I am here. When I pulled the motor I found in the bell housing three roller bearings laying in there as well as a small spring. I have no idea where they could have cvome from. It is an auto tranny so no pilot bearing. The starter has bushing, so do you have any idea if I have something else I have to replace. The radiator shop told me today that a new radiator is needed as well. oh well, why does that not surprise me!
Thanks.
I am qurious, what IDing method did you use to know that you have a ho po 390 intake? I'm sure the yard will be happy to sell you the matching goose neck.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
The intake had what appears to be a significantly higher profile than another stock four barrel intake I was looking at. Also, it looked to be the same configuration as the picture in the Ford performance interchange book that I have, where it calls one that looks like it a 390 high po. I haven't ran the numbers, however, nmor did I mic the intake runners for size. As for the big thermostat, none were listed in the NAPA parts books for a 390, only for the 352.
Barry,
Thanks for the link back. It brought up another question about the radiator outlet size. I never realized the difference in the size of the outlet. I am thinking of just using my smaller outlet with the themostat. It seems to fit the bolt holes and with a bit of RTV sealer, it might can work, recon?
There goes John, pissing on the parade again That intake is about as good at you'll ever find in a yard. Its said that its comparable to the ebok performer intake.
As far as I know the S intake is the best intake that you can find relatively easy. Of course the CJ and 427MR is better but I doubt you find any. If I could not afford the edel intake that is what I would use.
I think I said it was a good intake, will you splain to me what makes it better that some of the aftermarket intakes, even the performer?

1974fordtruck! Post the part number! Please. The big "S" is good and if you have one of these manifolds use it. Still weighs 77 pounds, UGH! I am curious about your comment that the manifold is taller than others you have seen? Are the heads that this manifold came with available? Those part numbers would also be interesting. And it is always a good idea to post the part numbers for the cylinder heads and the intake you plan to use. A quick gasket check will also indicate if the intake and heads are really compatible without modification.

Nobody is saying it is better John, just almost as good. The performer is better at least from the weight aspect. It probably outflows the S intake by a small margin also but costs about 150 more.
What Rat said pretty much sums it up John. Thats why I used the phrase "comparable" to the performer, not better. If I couldn't afford an aluminum intake it would the one that I could find (relativly) easy and happily use. Now lets talk about headers and stock logs...
