I need some advice. My wife's 2001 escape 3.0 liter started missing, had codes read at deailer showed misfire on cylinders 4 & 5. Also showed code for DPFE. I replaced all six plugs and all six coil on plugs as well as DPFE sensor. Reset codes and they did not come back. Since then, car hasn't had the power it should and does'nt shift correctly and it has slowly gotten worse. Check engine light came and the same day it blew a hole in the side of the egr valve. OK. Maybe that was problem, plugged egr valve. Replaced egr valve. Test drove a mile down the road & back and it blew the new one up. I now suspect plugged catalytic converters. My son-in-law works in parts at Chevy and used to work at Ford. He called exhaust man that does work form them. Apparently it will cost $800 to replace the 3 converters. I have found the 2 front converters for a total of $575 that are remanufactured.
Is that rear one a converter or resonator and do I need to replace it? It actually appears to be a rear converter and a resonator and then the muffler? I have seen some aftermarket universal converters that would need alot of fabrication by the muff? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Can't find the site I found remanufactured pair of converters for $575, found by searching yahoo. You can get on Ebay for $335 each. They are remanufactured and have a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty. Hope this was some help.

2. Clean Air Act Warranty Provisions (42 U.S.C. S 7541 (C) (3) (B))
The federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle makers to provide two emissions-related warranties -- a production warranty and a performance warranty. The production warranty requires the vehicle maker to warrant that the vehicle is designed, built and equipped so that it conforms with emissions requirements at the time of sale. The performance warranty requires the vehicle maker to warrant that the vehicle will comply with applicable emissions requirements as tested under state vehicle emissions inspection programs for the warranty periods specified in the law (for model year 1995 and later vehicles, the warranty is 2 years/24,000 miles for all emissions-related parts and 8 years/80,000 miles for the catalytic converter, electronic emissions control unit and on-board diagnostic device). The performance warranty is conditioned on the vehicle being properly maintained and operated.
