quick easy question

My 85 quit on me today and had to be towed home-that sucks. Anyway, we checked for spark at the distributor end of the coil wire, and no fire. I happened to have another coil wire so I tried it and no go. All of my previous experience has been with the old school coils, not the newer square style on this 300-6. Before I go and just buy a new coil, what would be the proper way to diagnose this? I am assuming you would just check the wires going in for voltage just like the old ones right? I haven't even looked at it other than to see if I had spark to the dizzy. I said screw it and fired up the 65. Check the fluids, kick the tires, good to go. The only thing that'll suck about driving it tomorrow is no stereo, and no power anything. It's all good, just the power when you put your foot into that ol 352 makes it all worthwhile. Anyway, if anyone has any input please post. If anyone followed my progress on my eddie bauer, you know why I want to be sure what the problem is before I buy ANY parts.

You are lucky that it quit. That is better than an intermittent issue. Haynes manual has detailed diagnostic proceedures.

Thank you Dennis. I just thought that someone here could put it more in layman' terms. I can read and I have a Haynes, but sometimes they take 3 or 4 pages to say what someone here can say in 3 or 4 sentences.

@ CFrives3...ain't that the truth.I'd say coil too.85?Doesn't have the old roundy one?Hmmmm.....I'd say pull the harness plug running to the coil that gives it power and hit the POSI with a test light with your key in the start position(as in the dash lights come on)if you're good there then it's the coil..if you're not...might be the Ignition module.

Well I pondered about this for a couple days. The 84 Bronc that I just picked up has a 300 6 in it too. I decided to keep it and swap out the motors. There were a couple factors in this. 94Nichols wants to buy the transfer case, but doesn't want to give up his to put back in it. The body is shot, but the motor sounds good. The rear end seems to have a lot of slop at the yoke. The tires (Remington Mud Brutes 235/75/15's) are all but new, can't see them having 1k miles on them. My 300 6 is an oil puker, and even though it does not knock or anything, I can hear the lower end. I don't really know how to describe it, but trust me it is tired. The motor in the 84 sounds good and runs strong. So we're gonna strip it and send it to the scapper. I appreciate the responses from all-I knew someone would understand why I asked the question in the first place. Thanks fellas!
