power steering pump problems

i have an 86 f250 that used to have a 6.9 in it, 4x4. i pulled my truck along my trailer today in the shad to do some primming and when i went to park it back along the road my steering got real hard. so i drove it around a few minutes and when i went to turn i had to man handle it. the pump is screaming bloody murder. so i parked it and checked the fuilds and they where fine. idealing it doesnt make the nosie as bad but idealing it around 15-2500 rpms and turning the wheel is loud. i checked the hoses and they where all in good shape. i just recently replace my pitman arm seal because it was leaking too fast to keep power steering fuilded in there over night.
what i need to know is would it be better to spend 45 $ and replace the pump or 16$ and rebuild it. and how hard would it be to rebuild the pump.
thank you
paul

I rebuilt the pump in my 77 F150 and it was a fairly stright forward project, but you do need a PS pulley remover/installer to get the job done. My PS pump is probable a little different than yours though, but I'm sure the process is not all that different.

i went a head and bought a new pump in hopes to having the truck run the next day for the ol lady.i worked 10 and came straight home to jump under the hood. well i got the pump and brakets out before sun set. i went to rumover the hex bolt from the center of the pully and hell came. i been soaking the hex bolt for a good bit in prep and during trying to remove it. well i say its been there since 81 and never been turned. got it a 1/4 to 1/2 way out and snap and a see powder come around the shocket. i thought a broke my hex bit but nope it won. now the hex bolt is craked in 4 nice spots not allowing me to get torq on the bolt for removale. i thought of welden and old hex drive in there and finish rmoving the bolt. do you think that would work and can i put just a regular bolt back in its place?
thank you

Do you have a picture of your set up? The way my PS pump was set up there was no hex bolt, but a shaft that you had to remove the pulley from using a special PS pulley puller. Are you sure that was a hex bolt that you broke? What does your replacement pump have on the end of the shaft? Good luck.

Sorry about the double post, but this website has been acting up lately. I have not been able to use the web links I receive in my email from this site for the a couple of days now.

Well do you know why I know about your PS pump problems, because I did the same thing you just did years ago, at least using the three jaw puller part anyhow. You can buy just a power steering pulley puller like I did originally, only later did I find I needed a PS pulley installer as well. I then bought a complete PS pump pulley remover/installer. I would check eBay, the classified section of this site, or Mikes Truck Parts for the pulley you need.

yea i talked to my buddy when he stopped by at work and i told him what i did. he was like i got two of them one here and one at home. he was like 6 hrs too late. too bad he didnt work this week.
i think by the time i find a new pully he should be off vaction and he'll let me use his so i dont have to by one, but i will some day down the road so i can have one in my tool box.
yea i tried looking all over today for the pully. i look at fte sponsor last night and had no luck. i bumped into a buddy a few mins ago at walmart and he said to try broncograveyard.com. i find it hard that people dont sell parts for these ol fords. well hope i find one soon.
